Sea Dogs Dedicate Skybox in His Honor and
Establish the "William Troubh Community Service Award"
Portland, Maine - The Portland Sea Dogs honored the life of Bill Troubh, who passed away on November 8th, 2013, as part of the Opening Ceremonies at Hadlock Field on Thursday night.  The Sea Dogs dedicated a Hadlock Field Skybox in his honor and established the "William Troubh Community Service Award."

Troubh was a lifelong resident of the city of Portland who dedicated his life to making Portland a great place to live and work. He served multiple terms on the Portland City Council and was Mayor of the city in 1974 and 1975 and again in 1983 and 1984. Troubh was instrumental in bringing the Portland Sea Dogs to the city in 1994. He also played a major role in the development of the Portland Waterfront, Cumberland County Civic Center and the Portland Ice Arena. His contributions will be enjoyed by residents and visitors of the city for generations to come.

Troubh was a lifelong baseball fan.  He stayed involved after his key role in helping to bring the Sea Dogs to Portland, serving as the teams' legal counsel and served a six year term as President of the Eastern League from 1997 through 2002.  On most summer nights Troubh could be found here at Hadlock Field enjoying a Sea Dogs game with family and friends.  He was inducted into the Portland Sea Dogs Hall of Fame in 2010.

"While my father is described as the founder of the Sea Dogs, he was also the first to say that the team would not be here had it not been for the heroic efforts of Bill Troubh," said Sea Dogs chairman Bill Burke.   "Bill was a great man, a valued advisor and a cherished friend.  We miss him terribly but are pleased for the
opportunity to honor his memory on a day that was always circled on his calendar, the home opener at Hadlock Field."

Troubh's wife Nancy along with their children, grandchildren, and friends were in attendance Thursday as the Sea Dogs unveiled the "Troubh" skybox.  A replica Sea Dogs jersey with Troubh's name and the number 13 are displayed on the outside of the box.  While a plaque inside the box honors Troubh's contributions.

Most of the Hadlock Field skyboxes are named after Red Sox legends such as Carlton Fisk, Carl Yastrzemski, and Ted Williams.  In 2001, the Sea Dogs dedicated a skybox to Bob Ganley, long-time Portland City Manager, who along with Troubh played an instrumental role in getting the Sea Dogs to Portland.

In addition, the Sea Dogs announced the formation of the "William Troubh Community Service Award". The award will recognize a local citizen that is making a positive impact within the city of Portland. It may be a public employee or private citizen that through their efforts makes Portland a great city to live and/or work in. The nominations for the award will open annually in February starting in 2015 and the winner will be recognized prior to a Sea Dogs home game during the season.

Troubh's grandchildren threw-out the ceremonial first-pitch to get the season started at Hadlock Field.

The Sea Dogs continue their opening homestand on Friday night at 6:00 PM against the New Britain Rock Cats.

Tickets are available for all 2014 home games.  Tickets can be purchased by calling the Sea Dogs Ticket Office at 207-879-9500 or online at www.seadogs.com.  Book your nine inning vacation today!

Gov. LePage Signs Rep. Amy Volk's Human Trafficking Bill

AUGUSTA, Maine - Governor Paul LePage signed Scarborough Rep. Amy Volk's bill to help human trafficking victims into law late Thursday morning. The new law makes sex trafficking an affirmative defense to the charge of prostitution, preventing victims of trafficking from being branded with a criminal conviction.

The measure also fines perpetrators of sex trafficking $500-$1,000 in addition to existing penalties and allows victims to draw from the Victims' Compensation Fund.

"This is a great day for the victims of sex trafficking," said Rep. Volk. "It was such a happy moment to see Governor LePage sign this bill into law after months of work where, at times, I doubted whether this day would come. Sex trafficking victims are more protected now and traffickers and their clients face stiffer penalties for the roles they play in taking advantage of other human beings."

The bill was the subject of a fierce political battle when it was introduced last fall, with Democrats opposing
and eventually supporting admission of the bill into the 2014 legislative session. The House and Senate ultimately enacted the measure on April 2 with unanimous votes.

Many organizations supported Rep. Volk's bill, including the Maine Coalition to End Domestic Violence, Maine Chiefs of Police Association, Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland, Maine Women's Lobby, National Association of Social Workers-Maine, Concerned Women for America of Maine, the Maine Coalition Against Sexual Assault, and others.

"Throughout the process of crafting this bill, I've had the pleasure of working with so many great people who work on the front lines and see the damage done by human trafficking every day, and it's taught me so much about this horrendous crime," added Rep. Volk. "All too often, the Legislature is full of partisan conflict, so it was really moving to see everybody unite behind this common goal of helping Maine women."

Governor LePage congratulated Rep. Volk and expressed support for the new law.

"Human trafficking is a horrific crime and I congratulate Rep. Volk for her tireless efforts to pass this legislation," said Governor LePage. "It's important we protect those who cannot protect themselves and if the defendant was herself a sex trafficking victim this bill seeks to address that. There is a massive underground trafficking industry and we must hold traffickers accountable, making prosecution and enforcement more effective, and provide greater protections to victims."

Rivero 3-for-4, 2 runs, 2 RBI in Win
Portland, Maine - The Portland Sea Dogs (4-3) opened up the 21st home season in franchise history with a 6-4 win over the New Britain Rock Cats (3-4) Thursday night at Hadlock Field in Portland. The 6,022 in attendance marked the largest for a home opener since 2003 for the Sea Dogs.

New Britain looked to spoil the home opener for the Sea Dogs and plated an unearned run against Keith Couch in the first inning. Kennys Vargas connected on a sacrifice fly to right and plated Brad Boyer to give the Rock Cats the 1-0 advantage.

Portland went quietly in the first, but regrouped and pulled ahead 2-1 in the second. With one out, Carlos Rivero tucked a double down the left field line and Matt Spring followed with a wall ball two-bagger off the Maine Monster that pulled the Dogs even at 1-1. Peter Hissey drove home the second run with a ground out to first that scored Spring two batters later.

D.J. Baxendale retired the side in order in the third, but Portland connected for another in the fourth, courtesy of a Sean Coyle single that plated Rivero and upped the lead to 3-1.

The left fielder Rivero was at it again with two down in the fifth against the righty Baxendale (0-1). He dropped a single into center that scored both Mookie Betts and Shannon Wilkerson to give Portland the 5-1
advantage.

Couch (2-0) settled into a groove after the first and never looked back. He retired the side in order in the second, and weaved his way through minimal trouble over the next three plus innings before being removed with two outs in the sixth.

For the second start in a row, the righty went five and two-thirds and allowed an unearned run. New Britain tallied five hits against Couch, walked once, and struck out five times. Baxendale finished six innings on the mound for New Britain. The righty gave up five runs, all earned, on eight hits; he walked one and struck out four.

The Sea Dogs tallied the final run of the night in the seventh on a triple to center by Mookie Betts. He came around to score on a throwing error on the relay throw from center by the shortstop Aderling Mejia to make it 6-1.

The Rock Cats attempted to mount a comeback late against Portland righty, Noe Ramirez. The run in the eighth came when Nate Hanson singled off of Ramirez and was guided around the diamond on three wild pitches by the righty.

Ramirez was sent back out to the mound for the ninth and was greeted by back-to-back base hits, which put runners on second and third with nobody out.  Corey Wimberly produced a run with a ground out to second and cut the deficit three.

Ramirez battled back and retired the next batter, but gave up an RBI single to Hanson and New Britain pulled to within two, at 6-4. Jose Valdez took over for Ramirez with two on and two out in the final frame. The veteran righty induced a ground out to second off the bat of Daniel Ortiz for the final out of the game.

The Sea Dogs and New Britain Rock Cats return to Hadlock and square off in game two of the four-game series Friday night at 6:00 PM.  The Sea Dogs will send lefty Mickey Pena (0-0, 6.00) to the mound against New Britain's LHP Taylor Rogers (0-1, 15.75). Radio coverage begins at 5:40 PM on the U.S. Cellular Sea Dogs Radio Network and www.seadogs.com.  Coverage on MiLB.TV kicks-off at 5:50PM. Tickets for all 2014 Sea Dogs home games are available and can be ordered by calling the Sea Dogs ticket office at 207-879-9500 or order online at www.seadogs.com.

CLINTON, New York -- The Bates College women's soccer team picked up a point in its NESCAC opener on Saturday, holding on to tie host Hamilton College 1-1 after a dramatic final moment of the second overtime period.

The Continentals (0-1-1, 0-1-1 NESCAC) narrowly missed winning the game; a deflection off a corner kick was ruled to have crossed the goal line just after the final buzzer ended the second overtime session.

The Continentals had two corner kick opportunities in the games' final 30 seconds. Becca Rees sent the first at the Bobcat net, where it was knocked over the end line by a Bates defender. With just over three seconds remaining, Blackwell's second kick was played in the air twice before winding up in the goal, but not before the horn had sounded.

Bates first-year student Olivia Amdur (Chicago, Ill.) gave Bates (1-0-1, 0-0-1 NESCAC) a one-goal advantage midway through the opening period. She took control of an unsettled ball and sent a 40-yard right-footed shot from the left side of the field toward the right post. The ball curved back into the post and into the net to give the visitors the lead. Amdur has played a role in three of Bates' four goals this season, with one goal and two assists.

A Blackwell corner kick set up the game-tying goal for Hamilton; six minutes into the second half, she sent a ball to the far post, where Cassie Hayward directed it back to the middle of the net for her first collegiate goal.

Hamilton came close to taking the lead in the 57th minute when an indirect kick bounced off the crossbar directly to Victoria Freeman, who headed the rebound into the arms of Bates sophomore goalkeeper Sarah McCarthy (Rockville Centre, N.Y.).

The Continentals owned a 25-8 advantage in shots and 11-0 in corner kicks. They had the best scoring opportunity of the second overtime session, but Bates nearly won the game twice in the first overtime, both off chances created by Amdur. Five minutes in, she had a breakaway thwarted when Hamilton's Olivia Simone took the ball from her at the top of the box. Four minutes later her high shot bounced off the cross bar directly to senior captain Leah Humes (Beaconsfield, Quebec), who headed the ball back at the net, but also at a Continental defender who knocked it away.

Emily Dumont made three saves for Hamilton and McCarthy stopped eight shots in the Bobcat net.

Bates will host Husson on Wednesday at 8pm. The game has been designated "Maine High School Night," with several area high school teams expected to attend.
