Portland Ovations Presents Inventive and Awe-Inspiring Dance Company Pilobolus at Merrill Auditorium

Portland, Maine - Portland Ovations brings back the ever-evolving dance company Pilobolus for a Friday evening performance April 25th at 8pm at Merrill Auditorium.

Pilobolus returns for an awe-inspiring evening of visual ingenuity and physical spectacle. More than a dance company, Pilobolus continues to astound with its ever-evolving, inventive movement-based performance - pushing the envelope of what is possible and, moreover, what is expected. Twisting bodies, sheer athleticism and a delightful sense of play combine with one-of-kind sets, sound and costumes for a glorious display of what the human body - and mind - can do.

Pilobolus' Ovations program promises to be one of its most intriguing and perhaps the most diverse program for the dance company to date, ranging from the theatrical to something unexpected to classic Pilobolus - now and of the past. It is also a program created with both unexpected and refreshing collaborations from the antics of magicians Penn & Teller to the creative mind of director/choreographer Trish Sie, known for her fabulous video work with the band OK Go (Here it Goes Again).

The evening will open with Automaton, the result of an international partnering with Belgian choreographer
Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui. The cyborg-like dance is described as "somewhere between Tron and Bladerunner." Following Automaton is Trish Sie's Skyscrapers, a tango Sie built in collaboration with Pilobolus and OK Go. Finishing off the first half of the evening is a classic work, Ocellus. The 1972 piece features a quartet of men moving in that liquid, mesmerizing way that is the hallmark of Pilobolus. The second half of the evening opens with [esc] created in collaboration with Penn & Teller. Using Houdini as the point of inspiration, the highly theatrical and provocative piece investigates the many ways one can escape being bound. Finishing it all off is, Megawatt, which is quickly moving into Pilobolus' signature repertoire as one of my most highly requested (and re-requested) works. Set to the music of Primus, Megawatt is a pulsing crowd pleaser.

Ovations Offstage offers a Pilobolus dance masterclass the morning of April 25th from 10am -12pm at Casco Bay Movers Dance Studio. The advanced-level class costs $25 per student. And registration is required. To register: call 207.773.3150 or email offstage@portlandovations.org.

Tickets for Pilobolus range from $29 to $40 for Ovations' Members and $32 to $44 for the general public with a limited amount of $20 Student Tickets also available. The Pilobolus performance is locally sponsored by The Portland Phoenix and supported by the New England Foundation for the Arts. To purchase tickets visit www.portlandovations.org, call PortTIX at 207.842.0800 or go to the box office window at Merrill Auditorium.

Portland Announces Hall School Added to State Education Board’s List of Approved Building Projects

Portland, Maine - Portland city and school officials announced that the Maine State Board of Education voted unanimously today to add Portland’s Fred P. Hall Elementary School to the state’s Major Capital Construction Approved Projects List. Schools on the list receive state funding for their projects, and Hall Elementary is one of six schools that were added to the list today. Replacing Hall is expected to cost more than $20 million, according to a study completed last year by Oak Point Associates.

“We really appreciate the state recognizing the importance of this critical project,” said Portland Schools Superintendent Emmanuel Caulk.  “Replacing Hall has been our district’s top priority for building improvements.  Securing state funding allows us to move forward with planning for Portland’s remaining mainland elementary schools that need major renovations: Reiche, Lyseth, Presumpscot and Longfellow.  Combining state and local funding is the only way we can address our critical needs while reducing the burden on Portland taxpayers.”

Hall is a one-story building on Orono Road in the Deering neighborhood, a short walk from Sagamore Village.  Built in 1956, the school has ponds on its roof after rainstorms, rotting wood siding and sills and some building materials that contain asbestos.  Hall had an electrical fire in September 2012 that required the
entire school to move elsewhere for two weeks.  Traffic flow also is a concern, as is compliance with certain Americans with Disabilities Act requirements.

“This is great news for Portland students,” said Senate President Justin Alfond. “The parents and students of Hall School have waited for years. Now, we can build the school our students deserve.”

“I want to thank the Superintendent and his staff, the Commissioner Rier, and the Portland legislative delegation for their assistance with our request,” Mayor Michael Brennan said. “This is a big step for the city and great news for the Hall School. This significant renovation will allow us to put a plan in place for a number of our other elementary school construction projects in the city.”

“Today’s vote is an important milestone,” said Justin Costa, chair of the Portland Board of Public Education’s Operations Committee.  “We look forward to working with the state and city on these long overdue elementary school building improvements.

Portland City Councilor Ed Suslovic has also long been a champion of renovating the Hall School.

The Portland Public Schools has conducted several studies over the past 15 years to identify deficiencies in the district’s elementary schools that detract from student learning.  Improvements have been made in phases in order to lessen the impact on taxpayers and disruptions to teaching and learning.

During the past seven years, the district built two new schools with state funding - East End Community School (2006) and Ocean Avenue Elementary School (2011) - and renovated and added to Riverton Elementary School (2007) with local funding.  Last year, the district launched Buildings for Our Future to address significant needs at the remaining mainland elementary schools.  The goal is to ensure that all elementary students attend schools with safe environments designed for academic excellence and 21st century learning.

The district hired Oak Point Associates in 2012 to develop preliminary design plans, tentative construction schedules and estimated costs for projects at Hall, Presumpscot, Lyseth, Reiche, and Longfellow.  Oak Point drew on hundreds of hours of community input including one-on-one conversations with parents and teachers, neighborhood design charrettes, focus groups and phone surveys when making its proposals.

The package of renovations recommended by district leadership and the school board includes $11.2 million for Longfellow, $15.3 million for Lyseth, $12.3 million for Presumpscot and $12.2 million for Reiche.

Portland Returns the Favor, Topples Trenton 9-2

Owens stays scoreless, racks up nine Ks in the win
TRENTON, NJ - The Portland Sea Dogs (3-3) staked their ace an early lead and never looked back thumping the Trenton Thunder (3-3) 9-2, Wednesday night at Arm & Hammer Park in Trenton, NJ. The win snaps a three-game losing streak and pulls the Portland back to .500 on the season.

The Sea Dogs found themselves with an early lead for the first time in three games. Travis Shaw walked with two down to begin the rally. Stefan Welch singled him to second and Henry Ramos loaded the bases with a walk. As Blake Swihart hit, Trenton starter Bryan Mitchell tossed a wild pitch and Shaw scored the first run of the game.

After a quiet second the Dogs manufactured another run and doubled the lead to 2-0.  Mookie Betts led off the frame with a walk and stole second. Deven Marrero grounded out to first, which pushed Betts to third. Shaw followed and drove him home with a ground out to second.

Henry Owens took the hill for Portland and in his second start he was nearly as dominant as he was on Opening Night in Reading. The tall lefty was staked the 1-0 lead after the first

Mitchell (0-1) couldn't bounce back from the early troubles and was lifted in the fifth after the Dogs tacked
on another pair. Four straight singles began the fifth inning for Portland and it was the base hits off of Marrero and Shaw's bats that drove in the third and fourth runs.

He finished four-plus and gave up the four runs, all earned, on six hits; he walked four and struck out four.

The bullpen didn't fair much better against the Sea Dogs lineup, which had its biggest output of the season. Portland loaded the bases three separate occasions and plated five runs to increase the lead to 9-0. Sean Coyle and Wilkerson connected on two-run hits for the big blows.

Owens (2-0) took the lead and put it in cruise control. The 6'6 southpaw pitched into the seventh and was lifted with a runner on and two down in the frame. Matty Ott took over and struck out the final hitter of the inning.

The Red Sox top-pitching prospect finished his second outing after six and two-third shut out innings. He allowed six hits, did not walk a batter and struck out nine. In two starts Owens has not yielded a run across 12 and two-third innings; he has walked just two and struck out 18.

Trenton showed some life late and plated a pair of runs in the 8th off of Ott. With two on and two out it was highly touted prospect Gary Sanchez that doubled to the track and put Trenton on the board.

The Sea Dogs hit 95 North, head to Hadlock, and get set to open up the home season against the New Britain Rock Cats Thursday night at 6:00 PM.  The Sea Dogs will send righty Keith Couch (1-0, 0.00) to the mound against New Britain's RHP D.J. Baxendale (0-0, 3.86). Radio coverage begins at 5:40 PM on the U.S. Cellular Sea Dogs Radio Network and www.seadogs.com.  Coverage on MiLB.TV kicks-off at 5:50PM. Tickets for Opening Day and all 2014 Sea Dogs home games are available and can be ordered by calling the Sea Dogs ticket office at 207-879-9500 or order online at www.seadogs.com.

USS Vandegrift Returns to San Diego following Rescue at Sea

SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- The Oliver Hazard Perry-class guided missile frigate USS Vandegrift (FFG 48) arrived at Naval Base San Diego April 9 following the rescue of a family with a sick infant on a disabled sailboat approximately 1,300 miles south of San Diego.

The rescue at sea was a joint-interagency rescue effort involving Navy, Coast Guard and California Air National Guard personnel that started April 3 after the Coast Guard received a distress call from the sailing vessel, Rebel Heart, requesting assistance for a sick one-year old child.

"As a Navy warship we prepare for all types of contingencies and several different missions. I will say that my crew was able to turn on a dime to complete the exercise that we were doing and then get ready for a real life rescue mission," said Lt. Cmdr. Daryl Robbin, executive officer of Vandegrift.

Following the distress call, the U.S. Coast Guard requested assistance from the California Air National Guard's 129th Rescue Wing, stationed at Moffet Field, Calif. and the Navy. The 129th Rescue Wing launched an Air Force MC-130P Combat Shadow aircraft and four pararescuemen who arrived on scene and rendered medical assistance. U.S. 3rd Fleet directed Vandegrift, which was conducting routine operations off the coast off San Diego, to render assistance to the distressed vessel.

"It was a little bit tough since we are rolling into a deployment soon, everyone knew it was a real situation and we came together for that," said Lt.j.g Chris Cheezem, boat officer during the rescue. "It was great job satisfaction to have been put through drills inspections and then to be able to use it in a real world rescue mission."

Vandegrift arrived on scene April 6 and brought the family and four pararescuemen aboard using the ship's 7-meter rigid hull inflatable boat (RHIB).

"We would like to express how grateful we are to the men and women of the Coast Guard, California Air National Guard and Navy who rescued our family, especially the pararescuemen and crew of USS Vandegrift," said Eric and Charlotte Kaufman, family rescued from sailing vessel Rebel Heart.

Prior to mooring at Naval Base San Diego, the ship made a previously scheduled stop at Naval Air Station North Island to load ordnance. The family disembarked at that time to proceed to their family physician.

"The Vandegrift was in the right place at the right time and we were happy to help," said Cmdr. Luis Alva, commanding officer of Vandegrift.

Joint, interagency and international relationships strengthen 3rd Fleet's ability to respond to crises and protect the collective maritime interest of the U.S. and its allies and partners.

About Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta
Back in the 60s, classic yachts, which were gathered in English Harbour Antigua, had begun chartering and the captains and crews challenged each other to a race down to Guadeloupe and back to celebrate the end of the charter season. From this informal race, Antigua Race Week was formalised in 1967, and in those days all of the yachts were classics. As the years grew on, the classic yachts were slowly outnumbered but the faster sleeker modern racing yachts and 24 years later the Classic Class had diminished to a few boats and was abandoned in 1987. However this same year seven classic yachts turned out and were placed in Cruising Class 3 with the bare boats. The class was so unmatched that it was downright dangerous, so Captain Uli Pruesse hosted a meeting onboard Aschanti of Saba with several classic skippers and in 1988 the Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta was born, with seven boats.

The Regatta has evolved into what it is today with the help of a faithful and long standing Committee, and some friends who have brought notoriety to the event. In 1991, Elizabeth Meyer brought her newly refitted Endeavour and Baron Edmond Rothschild brought his 6-meter Spirit of St Kitts and “CSR” became the first Sponsor and inaugurated the Concours d’Elégance. After a few years, Boat International Magazine and our good friend Christian Chalmin took over the Concours d’Elégance and with the publicity their magazine gave us we gained worldwide recognition.  In 1996 we created the “Spirit of Tradition Class”, which has now been accepted all over the world, which gives the “new” classics, built along the lines of the old, a chance to sail alongside their sister ships. In 1999 we celebrated the first race between the J class yachts in 60 years.  Mount Gay Rum has sponsored the Regatta for many years, and we have recently added Officine Panerai as our first ever Platinum Sponsor.

The Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta has maintained a steady growth, hosting between 50 and 60 yachts every year and enjoys a wonderful variety of competitors, including traditional craft from the islands, classic ketches, sloops, schooners and yawls making the bulk of the fleet, together with the stunningly beautiful Spirit of Tradition yachts, J Class yachts and Tall Ships. Together, these make a wonderful sailing spectacle in the ideal trade wind sailing conditions of the Caribbean. The sailing combined with Antiguan hospitality, plenty of rum, sunshine, and great camaraderie in a friendly relaxed atmosphere, places the Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta, in a class of its own.

Their first one is scheduled for an hour this Saturday, April 12, at 11am PST/2pm EST, and features one of their fave celebrities, Kelli Berglund, star of the Disney XD show, Lab Rats. Kelli’s little sis Kirra will also be joining the party, in honor of their current “Sisterhood” issue on newsstands where they are both featured.

Participants will have an opportunity to live chat with Kelli and Kirra, as well as have chances to win prizes, including autographed magazines and a personal phone call with Kelli! All details, including a place to submit questions for Kelli & Kirra, are at http://byoumagazine.com/twitterparties

Here’s part of BYOU Magazine’s exclusive interview with what Kelli has to say about her relationship with her sister:

“Kirra and I share a relationship neither of us shares with anyone else. We learn from each other and go through our ups and downs, but at the end of the day, we know we’ll always be there for each other. It's a relationship we'll share for our entire lives, and we're so blessed to have such a close companion by our side!

It's important for a little sister to be able to turn to her big sister, and I always try my best to do that for Kirra. I want us to be able to laugh and cry together, and reminisce on old memories and the lessons we learned from them. I always tell her that I'm willing to talk whenever she needs me... and having that "open-armed" attitude is what keeps us close. My sister is my best friend. It's a bond that can't ever be broken.”

Fans of the series 'Boy Meets World' from the 90s will enjoy the spin-off 'Girl Meets World' just as much. This series stars Rowan Blanchard, Sabrina Carpenter, Ben Savage and Danielle Fishel.

Girl Meets World is an upcoming American television sitcom. The series, set to debut in 2014 on Disney Channel, is a sequel to the sitcom Boy Meets World, which aired on ABC's TGIF block from 1993 to 2000. The new series will follow Riley Matthews (Rowan Blanchard), the teenage daughter of Boy Meets World main characters Cory and Topanga Matthews, as Riley navigates the challenges of life. Ben Savage and Danielle Fishel, who played Cory and Topanga respectively in the original series, will reprise their roles in this series, as will other members of the original cast.

Set in New York City, the new comedy series will tell the wonderfully funny, heartfelt stories that "Boy Meets World" is renowned for -- only this time from a tween girl's perspective -- as the curious and bright 7th grader Riley and her quick-witted friend Maya embark on an unforgettable middle school experience. But their plans for a carefree year will be adjusted slightly under the watchful eyes of Riley's dad who's also a faculty member (and their new History teacher) and Riley's mom who owns a trendy afterschool hangout that specializes in pudding.

The series was created by Michael Jacobs ("Boy Meets World,""Dinosaurs,""My Two Dads,""Charles In Charge") and April Kelly ("Boy Meets World") and is executive-produced by Jacobs. "Girl Meets World" is from It's A Laugh Productions, Inc. and carries a TV-G parental guideline.
