Governor LePage welcomes regional effort to import more hydropower from Quebec

Augusta, Maine - Governor Paul R. LePage today applauded a regional effort that seeks to bring
competitive hydroelectric power to Maine and New England.

Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, Rhode Island and Vermont have launched an initiative to secure cleaner, cheaper power options by importing large amounts of hydro into New England. The New England States Committee on Electricity (NESCOE) will evaluate the expansion of large hydro and create a strategic plan to be presented to New England Governors later this year.

Governor LePage has proposed removing the 100-megawatt limit on renewable sources of energy, which would allow Maine to import significantly more hydro from Quebec.

“Lowering the cost of energy is vital to making our business climate more competitive,” said Governor LePage. “I continue to push for energy policies that will allow Maine to import clean, renewable and affordable hydro power, which will provide our businesses with electricity at lower rates. The plan by NESCOE will allow us to partner with the entire region and get for the most affordable prices for the Maine ratepayer.”

The benefits of clean hydropower include reducing and stabilizing electricity prices; enhancing fuel diversity; increasing electric grid reliability; reducing environmental impact from the energy sector; and encouraging energy resources from within the region.

“It makes sense to work with our regional partners to bring more of this clean energy resource to New England,” said Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick.

“Vermont has long worked to have a diverse mix of green, clean sources of electricity that can address climate change in a way that is affordable for ratepayers, and hydropower is an important part of furthering those goals,” said Vermont Governor Peter Shumlin.

“Governor LePage envisioned a regional partnership to bring competitive hydroelectric power to Maine and New England since he took office, and this is a critical step in moving forward with this objective,” said Patrick Woodcock, Director of the Maine Governor’s Energy Office. “Maine welcomes this leadership from the State of Massachusetts, as well as our regional partners, and looks forward to collaborating to bring additional hydroelectricity to New England and ultimately developing a true regional renewable energy market.”

Take Appropriate Precautions When Visiting Beaches, Lakes and Pools This Summer

Maine - Summer is just around the corner and Maine's lakes, rivers, beaches, and pools will soon be in full use. This is a perfect time of year to remind residents and visitors about healthy and safe swimming practices.

"Maine's beaches, lakes and rivers will be full of swimmers, boaters, fisherman and adventure-seekers this summer,'' said Governor Paul R. LePage. "I urge people to take the necessary steps to assure they are safe while enjoying some of Maine's best natural resources. Swimmers, boaters and pool owners must do all they can to reduce the risk of accidents that may have tragic consequences."

Recreational water illnesses (RWIs), drowning and sunburn are leading public health areas of concern during the summer months. Contamination of recreational water due to poor swimmer hygiene threatens health. Even when the levels of chlorine and other pool water treatments are well maintained, they don't kill all germs instantly and some can linger in the water for up to 10 days.

In addition to illness, safety is a key concern. Every day, about 10 people die in the United States from unintentional drowning and of those, two are age 14 or younger. Nationally, drowning is the sixth leading cause of unintentional injury death for people of all ages and the second leading cause of death for children
ages 1 to 14 years.

"We all share the water we swim in and we each need to do our part to keep ourselves, our families, and our friends healthy and safe," said Dr. Sheila Pinette, Director of the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention, which recommends the following preventative measures:

Don't let the water get contaminated
- Don't swim when you have diarrhea
- Shower with soap before you start swimming

Take a rinse shower before you get back into the water
- Take children on bathroom breaks every 60 minutes or check diapers every 30-60 minutes
- Change diapers in the bathroom or diaper-changing area
- Wash your hands after using the toilet or changing diapers

Don't swallow the water you swim in

Check chlorine and pH levels before getting into pools
- Proper chlorine levels maximize germ-killing power
- Free pool test strips are available through the Maine CDC website at http://www.maine.gov/dhhs/mecdc/infectious-disease/epi/order-form-wn.shtml or http://www.healthypools.org/freeteststrips/ Reduce the risks of drowning
- Learn to swim and closely watch swimmers in or around water
- Look for lifeguards and heed warning flags
- Know the terrain; Avoid rip currents
- Use U.S. Coast Guard approved life jackets
- Avoid alcohol when swimming or on the water.
- Make sure that proper fencing is around all pools and that locks are placed at entry points.

Protect yourself from UV Radiation
- Use sunscreen with sun protective factor (SPF) 15 or higher, and both UVA and UVB protection
- Seek shade, especially during midday hours
- Wear clothing, hats, and sunglasses

Augusta, Maine - In 1981, the Maine State Legislature proclaimed the last Saturday in June of each year to be designated R.B. Hall Day.  The Governor annually issues a proclamation inviting community bands across the state to observe this day to honor Maine's own R.B. Hall, an internationally recognized composer of marches who was also an accomplished conductor and cornet soloist.

Old Fort Western is pleased to host this special event again this year.  On June 29th Community bands from all over the State of Maine will converge at the fort and play from 8:30am until 7:30pm with the fort and the Kennebec River as their backdrop.  While here be sure to tour Fort Western.  Admission to the fort will be free; however, donations towards our educational programming will be warmly welcomed.  Old Fort Western will be grilling hotdogs and serving them with chips, soda, and ice cream and all proceeds will go towards our non-profit organization.

Fort Western was built in 1754 during the French and Indian War and soldiers were stationed at the Fort under the command of Capt. James Howard.  Once the war ended, Capt. Howard, purchased the property and, with his sons, operated a store until 1807; members of the Howard family continued to reside at Fort Western into the mid 1800's.  Beginning about 1870, the main house was converted into tenements to house workers attracted to manufacturing, publishing, and other jobs in Augusta. The Old Fort Western Museum has operated as a non-profit organization since 1922 when the Gannett family renovated the old fort and then gifted it back to the City of Augusta

Mrs. LePage Talks About the Positive Effect of National Service and Volunteerism In Maine
Augusta, Maine - On Friday, June 21, Maine’s First Lady Ann M. LePage will participate in a “Fireside Chat” during the National Conference on Volunteering and Service at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, DC.

She will be joined by the First Ladies of Rhode Island and Nebraska, to discuss their strong leadership on service and volunteering. Addressing over 4,000 National Service leaders and volunteers from around the country, First Lady LePage will talk about the positive impact of national service on Maine communities and those who serve. Specifically, she will focus on her volunteerism with Maine’s veterans, our service men and women, and services provided to Maine’s elderly. Maine has a devoted network of National Service volunteers numbering over 3,900.

“I am so honored and humbled to be asked to share the stage with First Ladies Sally Ganem of Nebraska and Stephanie Chafee of Rhode Island,” Mrs. LePage said. “Maine is a rural state, and it is critical that we all work together to meet the needs of our community members. Government alone cannot do this. We must come together as a state – as Mainers – to lend our neighbors a helping hand.”

“Only the Young” presented at the Portland Public Library POV Summer Documentary Series

Thursday, June 27th from 7:30-9:00pm in the Rines Auditorium
Portland, Maine - The Portland Public Library POV Summer Documentary Film Series presents Only the Young on Thursday, June 27th from 7:30-9:00pm in the Rines Auditorium.  Chris Gorman, Associate Director at the Maine Youth Action Network - an organization that seeks to engage and empower youth in Maine - will introduce the film and lead a facilitated discussion with the audience after the film.

The film, by Jason Tippet and Elizabeth Mims, chronicles skateboarders Garrison and Kevin, and Garrison's on-and-off girlfriend, Skye who are in many ways living the archetypical American teen life. Growing up in the small southern California town of Santa Clarita, they hang out, listen to punk music, change their hairstyles (and hair colors) and complain about living in a place with nothing to do. They explore friendship, discover first love (and heartbreak) and dream about the future. They are unconventional, perhaps, because they combine their Christian faith with American teen culture. They also show remarkable candor in front of the camera.

As beautifully and vividly captured in the new documentary Only the Young, something else is different--the America around them. Foreclosed homes, empty swimming pools, trashy underpasses and a closed mini golf course form much of the visual poetry of Garrison and Kevin's daily skates around town. As high school graduation approaches, these signs of a nation in economic turmoil become dramatic realities that complicate the teens' relationships and their hopes for the future.

The Portland Public Library Summer Documentary Film Series is held on Thursdays  throughout the summer starting at 7:30pm in the Rines Auditorium.  This series is made possible by a partnership between the Portland Public Library and POV (Point of View), Public Television’s premier documentary series.  Films are shown before their actual air date on PBS and offered free to the public.  Facilitated group discussions will be offered after select showings.

The award-winning POV series is the longest-running showcase on American television to feature the work of today’s best independent documentary filmmakers. POV has brought more than 300 acclaimed documentaries to millions nationwide and has a Webby Award-winning online series, POV’s Borders. Since 1988, POV has pioneered the art of presentation and outreach using independent nonfiction media to build new communities in conversation about today’s most pressing social issues. CLEVELAND — The Coast Guard continues investigating an unknown film Tuesday that was reported in southern Lake Michigan one day earlier.

About 3 p.m. Monday, a communications watchstander at Coast Guard Station Michigan City, Ind., was notified of an unknown film in the water near Porter Beach, Ind. The station directed the reporting source to contact the National Response Center.

Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit Chicago dispatched a response boat to the area, and pollution investigators found no visible film.

A helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Traverse City, Mich., was diverted from a training mission to conduct an overflight of the area from the Port of Indiana to Michigan City, Ind., and found no evidence of film. They did see a few pollen blooms.

The U.S. Geological Survey has taken water samples, and the results are pending.

Just after 4 p.m., Station Michigan City received a report that the film had reached Michigan City.

"At this point, the Indiana Department of Environmental Management is conducting a more thorough analysis of samples taken to determine what the actual materials are," said Petty Officer 1st Class Jeremy Thomas, a pollution investigator at MSU Chicago. "Preliminary results indicate it was not petroleum-based material, and an investigation is being conducted to determine the source."

Personnel from MSU Chicago is currently investigating, and they have found no sign of the film. Coast Guard investigators have reviewed a weeks worth of video from the Port of Indiana and have ruled out the port as a possible source. They have also ruled out the steel company ArcelorMittal as a source. The cause of the film remains under investigation, and the Coast Guard is working diligently alongside partner agencies, such as the USGS and IDEM, to determine any causative factors to see if there is anything that can be done to prevent similar occurrences.
