DOCUMENTARY FILM: Who Needs Sleep?
Ahhh... the glamorous life in Hollywood. Or is it? Film crews routinely work sweatshop hours, often clocking 15 to 18 hour days at the expense of their families, their health, their well-being, and even their lives. In 1997, after a 19-hour day on the set, assistant cameraman Brent Hershman fell asleep behind the wheel, crashed his car, and died. Deeply disturbed by Hershman's preventable death, filmmaker and multiple-Oscar-winning cinematographer Haskell Wexler shows how sleep deprivation and long work hours are a lethal combination. Who Needs Sleep? is a commentary on our quality of life.

Special accommodations for persons with disabilities can be made with 48 hours notice. Please call the Library at 594-0310.

This evening is one in a continuing Thursday evening series of literary, film and musical offerings sponsored by the Rockland Public Library & The Friends of the Rockland Public Library. Admission is free.

"Viva Cuba"

"Viva Cuba" Extended to June 26th with Award Winning Photograph

An exhibit featuring both portraits and street photography of Havana and Vinales, Cuba by Ann Tracy has been extended to June 26th at the Ann Tracy Fine Art and Photography space inside Constellation Gallery, 511 Congress St, Portland.  Included in this exhibit is an iPod photo - Mujer Doble - which won an Honorable Mention prize at the Professional Women Photographers' 2013 International Show in New York. (http://pwponline.org/display_exhibition_winners.php?s=54)

Tracy was in Cuba earlier this year on a people to people cultural exchange led by internationally renowned photographer Elizabeth Opalenik and organized by the Santa Fe Photographic Workshops.  Tracy is also a member of the Maine Artists Collective and has been vetted by U.S. Artists, a nonprofit group in Los Angeles, and successfully used their unique fundraising program for her next body of work entitled "The Three Graces For Environmental Awareness" which will be shown later this year.

"My conceit in designing the exhibit is that my little gallery within Constellation should evoke a truly Cuban feel", Tracy said.  "That's why we're emulating the Cuban "dryer" look - which is hanging the mounted photographs on clothes lines with clothes pins.  It also reminds me of my childhood in Maine where it was my job to hang out the laundry as the oldest girl in the family."

This is Tracy's first solo photographic show in Portland since moving here almost two years ago.  Although she grew up in Maine, NH and Massachusetts, her family moved to Colorado in 1969.  She most recently lived in Sacramento CA where she not only exhibited in many venues such as the Center for Contemporary Art and Asylum Gallery but her work has also been shown in galleries and museums in California, New Mexico, New York and Maui.

Eagle’s crew and cadets help build a school for children in need at St. Maarten

PHILIPSBURG, St. Maarten – During Eagle’s first port call in St. Maarten, crew and cadets helped renovate a school building for children in need at Philipsburg Saturday, May 25, 2013.

Working with the St. Maarten Chapter of the United States Navy League, more than 40 crew and cadets painted, repaired and cleaned a planned school building property located on the corner of L.B. Scott Rd. and Red Rose Rd. “We appreciate the opportunity to help children in need at St. Maarten.” said Capt. Wes Pulver, Commanding Officer of the Cutter Eagle. “Community service projects enrich the deployment experience where the crew and cadets learn to foster a meaningful relationship with the community.”

“We thank the Eagle’s crew for supporting the Navy League-sponsored community service project to help make a difference in children’s lives,” said Jack Stevens, President of the Navy League’s Caribbean and Latin American Region. “The Navy League’s partnership with the Coast Guard and the other sea services helps to strengthen relationships between nations and within the immediate community they serve in.”

On its cadet summer training deployment, the Eagle arrived in Philipsburg Friday for a port call lasting through the Memorial Day weekend. Their arrival marks the end of the first week underway after departing New London, Conn., May 11.

Eagle serves as a classroom at sea to future Coast Guard officers since 1946, offering a maritime leadership and professional development experience.  Currently, there are 145 cadets from the Coast Guard Academy embarked.  The summer deployment spans 11-weeks, stopping at nine port calls in five countries, with four different groups of cadets training onboard.

At 295 feet, the Eagle is the largest tall ship flying the stars and stripes and the only active square-rigger in U.S. government service.

Coast Guard rescues three from disabled vessel in Long Island Sound

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Coast Guard rescued three overdue boaters from their 8-foot inflatable boat five miles east of New Haven Harbor, Conn., Monday at approximately 7:30 a.m.

The Coast Guard received a call from Suffolk County Police Department, reporting that Alba Serrano reported her husband, son and nephew had left Rocky Point, N.Y., Sunday at 2 p.m., and were due back at 10 p.m., and had not yet returned.
The Coast Guard immediately launched a 45-foot rescue boat crew from Station New Haven, a 45-foot rescue boat from Station Eaton’s Neck, N.Y., and a MH-60 Jayhawk rescue helicopter crew from Air Station Cape Cod, Mass. Suffolk County also launched an air and boat search crew to assist in the search.
The Jayhawk rescue crew located the three boaters and safely hoisted them aboard the aircraft. The boaters were taken to Tweed New Haven Airport where EMS was awaiting to transfer them to Yale New Haven Hospital.
Their condition is unknown at this time.
"The Coast Guard would like to remind boaters, in addition to having the proper life saving equipment aboard, to check the weather before heading out to sea," said Petty Officer 1st Class Timothy J. Halverson, watchstander at Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound command center, New Haven, Conn. "What can start out as a nice day on the water, can end up being a life or death situation with fast moving inclement summer weather."
Safety measures that can save your life are:
  • Have your vessel inspected by the Coast Guard Auxiliary or Power Squadron.
  • File a float plan with someone who knows when you are leaving and when you plan to be back.
  • Make sure you have working sound-producing devices in the event of an emergency in low visibility.
  • Ensure flares are up to date and in good working order.

Trekkers’ Leadership Program Receives Local Grant

Juniors in Trekkers’ Leadership Program show their appreciation to the Knox County Fund of the Maine Community Foundation for its support of their program expansion.
Thomaston, Maine - Trekkers recently received a $2,500 grant from the Knox County Fund of the Maine
Community Foundation to support the expansion of the Leadership Training program for 11th and 12th grade students.

The leadership program is offered to junior and senior Trekkers who are looking to deepen and expand their mentoring skills. The program provides these student mentors an opportunity to become more knowledgeable facilitators to assist Trekkers Program Managers during the annual 7th-9th grade expeditions. As peer leaders, they take on key leadership roles during these formative expeditions, assisting the Program Managers in team building activities, logistics, and group discussion, group cooking and giving one on one mentoring attention to students throughout the 3-14 day expeditions.

The expanded leadership program began with three weekend retreats this year for the 11th graders who trained with Trekkers Executive Director, Don Carpenter, at Kieve-Wavus Leadership School at Camp Kieve in Nobleboro. This partnership with Kieve provided an opportunity for the students to use the high and low ropes course facility in order to explore team building skills and observe and discuss group dynamics. It also allowed the students to push their own comfort level, which aids them in relating to younger students during expeditions when they are asked to challenge themselves by choice during adventure activities. The student leaders also built their communication skills through the use of scenarios and role play, using examples from their personal lives to work through conflict transformation and resolution. They also explored boundary setting, peer mediation, and shared journaling reflections.

“We are so grateful to the Knox County Fund of the Maine Community Foundation to help make this expanded program available to our students. Our two year leadership progression model ensures that our student leaders understand what it means to put leadership in action,” said Trekkers Executive Director, Don Carpenter.

Moving forward into next year, Trekkers will offer three weekends of leadership training to these students in their senior year, in addition to recruiting a new group of juniors. Through the expanded program, each student leader will have experienced six consecutive weekend leadership trainings, each built upon the previous one. Trekkers is currently increasing overall enrollment and anticipates that the Leadership Program will double the number of participants in years to come.

Military-related Legislation Moves to the Senate, Governor and First Lady Continue to Advocate for Bills

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.
Augusta, Maine - Governor Paul R. LePage and First Lady Ann M. LePage on Tuesday continued
encouraging legislators to support two bills that ensure the state’s students have opportunities to explore military service. Debates today began in the House Chamber on LD 1502 and LD 1503 – both are Governor’s bills sponsored by House Republican Leader Ken Fredette of Newport.

LD 1502, An Act To Expand Student Access to Certain Career Information and Opportunities, would require school boards to adopt policies allowing the administration of the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery, known as ASVAB, to students who are interested. Some public high schools in Maine currently prohibit its administration on school grounds.

Republican lawmakers, many of them veterans, spoke in favor of the bill, saying that ASVAB is a valuable vocational aptitude tool for civilian as well as military jobs. They noted that opposition to the measure is reminiscent of the anti-military sentiment that marked the Vietnam era. However, the bill was rejected mostly along party lines, 74-68.

“Yet again Democrats continue to deny our students opportunities and options. The ASVAB test has great value in helping students consider their future potential in life and does not solely focus on military careers,” Governor LePage said. “It provides students and advisors a critical aptitude testing tool that helps students better understand themselves, regardless of the professions they choose.”

LD 1503, An Act To Ensure Student Access to Post-secondary Military Options, was also voted on in the House Tuesday after an hour of debate. The bill would require school districts to adopt policies allowing uniformed military recruiters the same access and opportunity to meet with students enjoyed by other post-secondary and career recruiters.

“Maine schools should be encouraging our nation’s uniformed heroes coming into schools, not discriminating against them. Banning uniformed recruiters and blocking students from taking the ASVAB is shameful behavior,” the Governor said.

“Military service is our nation’s highest calling, and nothing should stand in the way of Maine’s students who wish to pursue that brave and patriotic path,” said First Lady Ann LePage, who has made advocacy for Maine’s military members of past and present and their families a priority of her tenure as Maine’s First Lady. “Maine students should have the same opportunity to talk to recruiters from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines or Coast Guard as they do those from any college or university. We may have our political differences here in Augusta, but for the good of Maine’s young adults and our nation, let’s put them aside and join together to support these bills.”

Ultimately, House lawmakers passed LD 1503, 115-28.

Both bills now go to the Senate.
