Men's tennis debuts with six wins at Middlebury Invitational

MIDDLEBURY, Vermont -- The Bates men's tennis team played in its first tournament of the 2015-16 academic year this weekend, accumulating a 6-13 record against top-flight competition at the Middlebury Invitational.

Sophomore Ben Rosen (Port Washington, N.Y.) and first-year Duane Davis (Dix Hills, N.Y.) were among Bates' standouts at the tournament. Rosen went 1-1 in the A Singles Flight, including a 3-6, 6-0, 10-6 first-round victory over Skidmore's Kai Yuen Leung.

Davis was the lone team member to advance to a flight semifinal, posting a 6-0, 6-4 win over Suryansh Patel of RPI and a 6-2, 6-3 victory against Tufts' Ethan Chen on Saturday before falling in the flight semifinals on Sunday morning to Skidmore's Ted Berkowitz by a 6-4, 6-2 result.

Junior Pat Ordway (Falmouth, Maine) won one match in B Singles and sophomore Josh Leiner (Baltimore, Md.) won another match in C Singles. Bates also picked up a win in the B Doubles Flight, with Leiner and first-year Josh Quijano (North Hills, Calif.) advancing 8-4 past Tyler Ng and Harshil Dwivedi of Brandeis.

Bates will compete in the ITA Division III Northeast Regional Championships next weekend at Williams College.
