"L.L. Bean Boot" by Lea Smith, a senior at Camden Hills Regional High School
In celebration of Youth Art Month, UMA is joining Harlow Gallery and Kennebec Valley Art Association to present, the 1st Annual Maine Statewide High School Ceramic Arts Show, an exhibition of ceramic art by students from high schools statewide.  The exhibit will be on display April 9th – 26th at UMA’s Gannett Gallery.

An opening reception will be held on Wednesday, April 9 from 5 to 7 pm.  Maine State First Lady, Ann LePage will be attendance to hand out certificates and awards to participating students.

"The show sprouted out of a need to highlight students ceramic work,” said project organizer, Russell Kahn, an art instructor at Camden Hills Regional High School.  “This will be the first year to get the project off the ground and see great work from high school students in the state of Maine in the clay medium.”

The exhibit is part of an ongoing partnership between Harlow Gallery and UMA to help reinforce the value of teaching art in high schools and to provide high school artists the ability to show their work in a public gallery.

UMA’s Gannett Gallery is located at 331 Water Street in Augusta.  Gallery hours are Wednesdays through Saturdays 12-5pm.

The beautiful sixteen year old Bella Thorne has revealed her book cover for 'Autumn Falls which is coming out November 11th, 2014.

Bella Thorne is an actress, a dancer, a recording artist, an emerging style icon, and a debut author. Filled with personal elements from Bella’s own life, AUTUMN FALLS is the first book in Bella’s new series! It has everything readers will love and relate to: a real girl trying to find her own inner strength and be the best she can be, with a hint of magic and mystery, and a steady stream of OMG-I-can’t-believe-that-just-happened fun.

With her fiery red hair, new-girl outsider status, and tendency to be a total klutz, Autumn Falls definitely isn’t flying below the radar at Aventura High. Luckily, she makes some genuine friends who take her under their wing. But she also manages to get on the wrong side of the school’s queen bee, and then finds out the guy she’s started to like, funny and sweet Sean, hangs with the mean crowd. Now her rep and her potential love life are at stake.

When Autumn vents her feelings in a journal that belonged to her late father, suddenly her wildest wishes start coming true. Is it coincidence? Or can writing in the journal solve all her problems? And if the journal doesn’t work that way,  is there a bigger purpose for it—and for her?

Will you buy Bella's book 'Autumn Falls' when it comes out in November?

The Friends of Fort Knox announced that they will be opening the State Historic and Penobscot Narrows Observatory sites for school vacation week, Monday, April 21st through Sunday, April 27h, from 9 AM until 4 PM. The Fort will be open for exploration and there will be guided tours offered from 10 AM until 2 PM each day and the Penobscot Narrows Observatory will be opened from 9 to 4 PM. The Fort will then close to the public prior to opening for the regular operating season starting May 1.

Friends’ of Fort Knox, executive director Leon Seymour said that the organization is pleased to be able to open up the Fort and Observatory to provide area school children a fun place to visit during their school vacation. He said that now that the Friends have assumed complete management of the facility through a lease with the Maine Department of Conservation’s Bureau of Parks and Lands, the organization is able to expand operational possibilities. He thanked the Maine Department of Transportation’s flexibility with readying the Observatory for an early start.

During the early opening, on Saturday, April 26, from 10 AM until noon, volunteers are needed to team up with the Friends of Fort Knox and the Civil War Preservation Trust (CWPT) to help clean the Civil War era State Historic Site. The nationwide effort – dubbed Park Day – is underwritten with a grant from The History Channel. In past years, over one hundred and eleven sites took part in Park Day throughout the country.

Park Day, now in its fifteenth year, is an annual hands-on preservation event created by CWPT to assist local groups with the maintenance of Civil War sites. Participants gather at the sites to help with activities that range from trash removal to trail building. In exchange for their hard work, volunteers receive t-shirts and have an opportunity to learn about the historic site they are helping to clean.

Volunteers are needed to sweep, rake and ready Fort Knox for its ongoing season May 1 through October 31. Helpers are asked to bring rakes, shovels, wheel barrels, leaf blowers, tarps and work gloves. Participants should plan on arriving at 10 AM and helping to noontime. For more information about Park Day at Fort Knox, please call 469-6553 or email FOFK1@aol.com.

Individuals, who would like to help the Friends in their ongoing mission to preserve the Fort, learn about Fort history, Friends’ 2014 special events or hours of operation for the Penobscot Narrows Observatory are encouraged to visit their web site at fortknox.maineguide.com. Fort Knox is owned by the people of Maine, managed by the Friends of Fort Knox, and supervised by the Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands.
