Camden/Rockport, Maine - Local climbing guide Alan Rees will lead a presentation on climbing in Camden at Merryspring Nature Center on Tuesday, April 15 at 12:00 noon.

The Camden Hills are blessed with a glacial geology that is perfect for rock climbers, and they can often be spotted dotting the cliffs. Rees will present an overview about this sport, including types of rock climbing and the evolution of technical climbing, safety precautions, and both real and perceived dangers. He will also provide a brief explanation about why the rocks in Camden are suitable for climbing and a short history of climbing in the area. In addition to a short slide show, Rees will bring climbing gear for the audience to examine.

Rees has been doing technical climbing for the past 25 years. He is a certified guide through the American Mountain Guides Association and is trained as a Wilderness First Responder and Maine Recreation Guide. He is a member of the local high angle rescue team and has taught rock climbing at the Pen Bay YMCA for the past 11 years. He lives in Lincolnville.

This talk is the first of the Spring lecture series, sponsored by The First. Admission to Tuesday Talks is free for Merryspring members, with a nominal fee of $5 for non-members.

On March 18th, the Youthlinks Top Chef Rockland cooking club was visited by Chef Jeff Space, Director of Nutritional Services at Pen-Bay Hospital. Each week, local high school students gather at Youthlinks in Rockland to learn new cooking skills, taste new foods, and meet with local chefs who share their talents and knowledge with students.

Jeff Space joined the program to share with students the USDA’s “My Plate” initiative, to reinforce the Let’s Go 5-2-1-0 program (5 servings of fruits and veggies, 2 hours or less screen time, 1 hour or more physical activity, and 0 sugary drinks), and to improve student cooking skills. The “My Plate” model is a program of the USDA, which offers a simple, brightly colored guide for people to follow to create healthy and nutritious meals. “My Plate” transforms the food pyramid into a daily meal guide, with half a plate filled with fruit and vegetables, one quarter filled with a lean protein, and one quarter filled with a whole grain, and a serving of lowfat dairy on the side. Chef Jeff Space cooked a “My Plate” meal of asparagus, chicken, and lowfat cheese quesadillas; tomato, avocado, and cilantro salad; a black bean and mango salad; and seared pineapple, served with a container of skim milk. Chef Space showed students that flavor, color, and interest in a meal can come from a variety of fruits and vegetables and delicious herbs and spices instead of added fats or preservatives.

Students also improved their cooking skills while working with Chef Space, as he reinforced the proper way to hold and use chef knives, tips for peeling garlic, red peppers, and pineapples, and the best way to pit an avocado and a mango. The meal was then enjoyed by all participants!

Youthlinks is a program of Broadreach Family & Community Services, a non-profit organization that has been serving the children and families of Waldo and Knox Counties since 1983. For more information please call Youthlinks at 594-2221 or visit youthlinksonline.org.

Portland, Maine - Our Seas of Fear and Love is a romance-family saga set primarily in Maine but also in Europe, the Southwest, and Boston. Calm and stormy seas are emblematic of the characters, their influence upon one another and, the conflicts and love expressed among the four main characters – Brigit, Deirdre, Gregory and Étienne Moreau, a man who searches out art treasures to sell to museums. He takes as his partner Deirdre, a dark haired, vivacious beauty he meets during World War II when she was an OSS member and he was head of a Maquis group. Brigit, an extremely attractive red-haired woman and nurse cares for Gregory wounded during the war and who becomes a well-known medical researcher. Gregory and Brigit have fallen in love and plan their marriage. Deirdre then sets her sight on Gregory, ignoring her lover and partner Étienne, and a conflict occurs between the two women. Sea Dogs Downed 3-2 in Reading

Swihart 2-4, R, 2B in the losing effort
Reading, PA - The Reading Fightin Phils (1-2) pulled ahead for the first time all season with a run in seventh inning and held on to down the Portland Sea Dogs (2-1) Saturday night at FirstEnergy Stadium in Reading, PA. The loss marks the first for Portland in the 2014 campaign.

Cam Perkins led off the seventh inning with a double to left off of lefty Nate Reed and came around to score on an RBI single by Kelly Dugan to give the Fightin's the first lead of the series at 3-2.

Reading continued to put baserunners on against Reed (0-1) and loaded the bases with one out, but the southpaw battled back to strikeout Anthony Hewitt and induced a groundout off the bat of Edgar Duran to stem the tide and keep it one-run game.

With the lead, Reading was able to dial up the bullpen and brought on Jay Johnson for the eighth and Ken Giles for the ninth. Johnson earned a hold and mowed the Sea Dogs down in order in his frame, but it was Giles that slammed the door in the ninth.

Blake Swihart led off the inning with a bloop single, but Giles bounced back to strike out the side, topping out his fastball at 99 MPH by the bat of Mookie Betts for the final out of the game.

For the third game in a row, the Sea Dogs jumped out to an early lead. The red-hot Mookie Betts led off the game with a double to left and was driven home two hitters later on an infield single by Travis Shaw (2-3, BB, RBI).

The 'Dogs doubled up the lead in the second against Reading's Hoby Milner. Swihart (2-4, 2B, R) began the
frame with a two-bagger center and moved to third on a single by Sean Coyle. Stefan Welch was next and drove home the catcher with a sacrifice fly to right and earned his RBI as a Sea Dog.

The two-run lead would be short-lived as in the bottom of the second the Fightin Phils would battle back to tie it up. Sebastian Valle and Carlos Alonso hit back-to-back singles to being the Reading rally against Portland's southpaw Mickey Pena. After a fielder's choice, Duran smoked a double to left that plated two and tied the game.

Pena lasted just three innings in his season debut. The lefty gave up the two runs, both earned, on four hits, two walks and two strikeouts. On the other side of the rubber, Milner worked five innings and allowed the two earned runs on six hits, three walks and three strikeouts.

Matty Ott was the first out of the bullpen for Portland and he delivered two and two-thirds innings in relief of Pena. Michael Olmsted entered the game after Reed and pitched out of a bases loaded jam in the eighth to keep the deficit at one.

Former Red Sox farmhand, Nefi Ogando followed Milner and earned the win in relief. Ogando (1-0) gave up just one hit in his two innings and earned his first win of the year.

The finale of the four game set is Sunday at 1:35 PM from FirstEnergy Stadium.  The Sea Dogs will send lefty Mike Augliera (0-0, 0.00) to the mound against Reading righty Perci Garner (0-0, 0.00).  Radio coverage begins at 1:15 PM on the U.S. Cellular Sea Dogs Radio Network and www.seadogs.com. Coverage on MiLB.TV kicks-off at 1:30 PM.

The Sea Dogs home opener is set for Thursday, April 10th at 6:00 PM at Hadlock Field against the New Britain Rock Cats.  Tickets for Opening Day and all 2014 Sea Dogs home games are available and can be ordered by calling the Sea Dogs ticket office at 207-879-9500 or order online at www.seadogs.com.
