GORHAM, Maine – After 93 scoreless minutes of soccer, UMass Boston Beacon freshman Jaclyn O'Grady (Somers, Conn.) scored in the 94th minute to lift the Beacons to a 1-0 overtime win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference women's soccer game Saturday afternoon at Hannaford Field.  The goal was O'Grady's third game-winner of the season and team-leading fourth of the season.

With the win, UMass Boston remains undefeated in the Little East at 2-0 and improves its overall record to 3-4-1.  Southern Maine dips to 3-4 overall and 0-2 in the LEC.

O'Grady won the fifty-fifty ball and then settled it carrying to the center of the field.  Bringin the ball to just outside of the 18, O'Grady kept the Huskies' defender on her hip and turned and fired a low shot past the outstretched arms of USM senior goalkeeper Marissa Temple (Grafton, Mass.) for the win.

The game nearly did not reach the overtime session as the final few minutes of regulation saw a flurry of solid chances by both squads, including a direct kick from O'Grady that narrowly missed the upper 90, and a shot from senior Kate McMinamin (Acworth, Ga./Allatoona) clanged off the post. The Huskies had a pair of near one-on-one opportunities snuffed out by a call of offside.

Temple played outstanding in goal for USM making nine saves, including stopping a one-on-one attempt late in the second half and an athletic tip to save a goal off of a shot from UMB freshman Kate Leavitt (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth North) in the 43rd minute.  Beacons' freshman goalkeeper Alyssa Fugiel (Easthampton, Mass.) earned the shutout making five saves.

Southern Maine returns to action on Wednesday (4:00 p.m.) on the road at Colby in non-conference. UMass Boston stays on the road and travels to Salem State on Tuesday (7:00 p.m.).

BRUNSWICK, Maine –Rachel Kennedy scored both goals for the Bowdoin field hockey team in a 2-1 victory over Middlebury in a rematch of last year's NESCAC Championship game.

The second ranked Polar Bears remain perfect on the season with a 6-0 record, including a 5-0 mark in conference play. Fourth ranked Middlebury suffers its first lost of the season to fall to 4-1 (3-1 NESCAC). The Panthers and Polar Bears split games last season as Bowdoin captured a win at Middlebury during the regular season, with the Panthers notching a victory for the conference championship.

How It Happened
  • Just under four minutes into play, Bowdoin was awarded a penalty stroke. Kennedy missed the net and both teams traded possession and opportunity throughout the remainder of the half.
  • Kennedy put Bowdoin on top 1-0 with six seconds remaining in the opening half, finishing off a feed from Liz Znamierowski. Znamierowski worked the right sideline and cut across the endline before making a quick centering pass to Kennedy.
  • Middlebury evened the game with 10:17 remaining in regulation off a successfully executed corner. Annie Leondard cleanly stopped Jillian Green's insert for the Panthers and riffled off a shot from the top of the circle.
  • The Panther's successfully defended a pair of corners in the final ten minutes to keep the game tied.  Middlebury successfully defended 17 corners against the Polar Bears, as Bowdoin held a 17-10 edge in the category and was unable to convert on any opportunity.
  • Nicole Barbieri nearly converted on a one-on-one with Middlebury keeper Emily Miller, with the goalie making a split save to preserve the tie, but the result was a second penalty stroke for Bowdoin. Kennedy converted in the 66th minute to give the Polar Bears a 2-1 victory.

BRUNSWICK, Maine – Bowdoin and Middlebury played 110 minutes of scoreless men's soccer concluding in a 0-0 tie on Saturday afternoon on Pickard Field.

The Polar Bears (2-2-2, 1-2-2 NESCAC) play to their second 0-0 tie in as many games, while the Panthers (4-1-1, 1-1-1 NESCAC) were held scoreless for just the second time this season.

How It Happened
  • Connor Keefe had a pair of promising looks in the opening half, ringing a shot off the left post 10 minutes into action and beating the goalie with eight minutes left, but was unable to convert.
  • Middlebury came out with a promising scoring opportunity in the first three minutes of the second half with a service by Deklan Robinson that was punched out by Stevie Van Siclen. Jeremy Barovick collected the rebound and sent  his shot wide right as the game remained scoreless.

Van Siclen came up with another big save for the Polar Bears as Kirk Horton headed the ball on net following a corner kick feed from Adam Glaser in the 81st minute.

BRUNSWICK, Maine –Kiersten Turner supplied the Bowdoin women's soccer team with all the offense they would need as Bridget McCarthy turned away six shots to preserve the shutout and give Bowdoin a 1-0 NESCAC win over visiting Middlebury on Saturday afternoon.

The Polar Bears climb to 3-2-0 overall with a 2-2-0 conference record following the shutout. The Panthers drop their second straight contest, falling to 2-3-0 (1-3-0 NESCAC). The Panthers strung together six consecutive wins over Bowdoin between 2009-13, but Bowdoin has now won back-to-back contests.

How It Happened

Nick Vailas scored his first career touchdown on Saturday against Williams
BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Williams College football team controlled the ball for over 38 minutes of game time on its way to a season-opening 27-7 win over Bowdoin at Whittier Field on Saturday.

The Ephs amassed 438 yards of total offense to improve to 1-0 on the season while the Polar Bears fall in the debut of head coach J.B. Wells and drop to 0-1.

How It Happened
  • The Ephs took the opening kickoff and marched 76 yards in 11 plays, scoring on an 10-yard rush by tailback Connor Harris, who cut up the middle for the game's first score.
  • Williams carried a 7-0 lead into the second quarter when they capped another long drive - 93 yards on 11 plays - with a 21-yard pass from Austin Lommen to Adam Regensburg in the left corner of the endzone to make it 14-0.
  • Bowdoin cut short a Williams bid to add to the lead before halftime, stopping the Ephs on a fourth down at the Bowdoin 29 with under two minutes to go.
  • The Polar Bears drove to the Williams 37 with time expiring in the first half, but a Tim Drakeley pass was intercepted at the Williams 14 with 26 ticks left in the period.
  • Williams forced a Bowdoin three-and-out to open the third quarter and marched 77 yards in eight plays, scoring on a 18-yard screen pass from Lommen to Gary Plumb.
  • The Polar Bears got on the scoreboard with 2:24 remaining following a 10-play, 89-yard drive. Drakeley found Nick Vailas over the middle for a 21-yard strike and Bowdoin's first touchdown of the season.

LEWISTON, Maine -- Amherst College shrugged off an early 80-yard touchdown run by Bates College's Shaun Carroll and rolled to a 37-14 victory in both teams' season opener on Saturday at Garcelon Field.

Sophomore quarterback Reece Foy completed 22 of 33 passes for 286 yards and a touchdown for Amherst (1-0), with 10 of his completions and 125 of his yards going to Devin Boehm. Kenny Adinkra rushed for 104 yards on 20 carries as the Lord Jeffs totaled 556 yards of offense, including 345 in the first half.

Carroll (Clinton, Maine) finished with 107 yards on 13 carries for Bates and junior Ivan Reese (Savannah, Ga.) ran for 49 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries. Senior quarterback Patrick Dugan (Westford, Mass.) completed 11 of 16 passes for 117 yards, with senior Mark Riley (Needham, Mass.) catching seven balls for 87 yards.

Amherst amassed 17 first downs in the first half to Bates' four en route to a 28-7 halftime lead. The
Lord Jeffs finished with 28 first downs to Bates' 14.

It was the eighth straight victory against Bates for Amherst, dating back to Bates' last victory in the series in 1999; the NESCAC rivals play each other two out of every four years.

The game got off to a great start for the host Bobcats: they held the Lord Jeffs to 19 yards and a punt on their first possession, and the Bobcats took over at their own 20. On Bates' first play from scrimmage of the season, Carroll broke free on a left sweep and saw nothing but daylight by the time he reached the Bates 40-yard ilne, completing an 80-yard touchdown run for a 7-0 Bates lead.

Amherst wasted no time in evening the score, however, going 73 yards on six plays in a drive that elapsed only 1:34, including an 11-yard touchdown pass from Foy to Nick Widen.

Amherst was stopped for a three-and-out on its next possession, and junior Trevor Lyons (Hamilton, Mass.) picked off Foy in Amherst territory to set up the Bobcats at the Amherst 37. The Lord Jeffs set the Bobcats back for a loss on two straight plays, including a combined sack of Dugan by Evan Boynton and Sam Caldwell, forcing Bates to punt. Freshman Justin Foley's (Lynnfield, Mass.) punt went out of bounds at the Amherst 10.

Amherst faced 3rd and 7 at its own 13 when Foy completed to Jackson McGonagle for 30 yards, jump-starting a 13-play, 90-yard scoring drive that ended with Nick Kelly's 5-yard touchdown run with 1:09 left in the first quarter.

Amherst held Bates to a three-and-out and took over at the Bates 47. Foy hit Boehm for 21 yards on 3rd and 12, and two plays later McGonagle rushed around the end for a 23-yard touchdown for a 21-7 Amherst lead with 13:07 left in the half.

Bates scratched out a pair of first downs on its next possession and Foley punted 50 yards for a touchback. Amherst took over at its own 20 and began an 18-play, 80-yard scoring drive that both wore down Bates' defense and gave the Jeffs a 28-7 lead with two minutes left in the half. Amherst converted three third downs on the drive, including Foy's 1-yard touchdown run.

Amherst threatened to open a wider lead on its first possession of the ultimately scoreless third quarter, marching from its own 15 to the Bates 2.

Sophomore linebacker Max Breschi (Carlisle, Pa.) stuffed Adinkra for no gain, forcing a 4th and 1 at the 2-yard line, and Foy was sacked by Bates junior Ben Coulibaly (Philadelphia, Pa.) for a 10-yard loss, breathing new life into the Bates crowd of about 1,800 spectators. Bates quickly had to punt, however, and Amherst came back to the Bates 14, thanks to an Adinkra 11-yard rush and a 13-yard scamper by Raheem Jackson.

Jackson was stuck for a 2-yard loss by Coulibaly and junior Brandon Williams (Gardner, Mass.) broke up a pass thrown to McGonagle in the end zone, compelling Amherst to try a 31-yard field goal, which was kicked wide left by Wall. Bates took over at the 20 and began its second scoring drive of the day, moving the ball 80 yards in 14 plays, finished off by a 3-yard touchdown run by Reese with 13:10 left in the game, closing the gap to 28-14.

The teams traded short possessions before Amherst tacked three points to its lead as Wall hit from 31 yards, completing a nine-play, 37-yard drive that started at midfield. The drive's vital play was a 27-yard completion from Foy to tight end Rob Thoma that went for 27 yards.

Just when Bates' Reese had appeared to convert the first down on 4th and 1 at midfield, Amherst's Parker Chapman stripped him of the ball and fell on it to quash Bates' waning hopes. Amherst took over with 3:48 left in the fourth quarter and tacked on a 33-yard touchdown run by backup Jack Hickey in the final seconds of the game to make it 37-14.

Lyons, Coulibaly and sophomore Andrew Jenkelunas (Rocky Hill, Conn.) shared Bates' tackling lead with 10 apiece, while Coulibaly posted four tackles for a loss. Chris Gow and Evan Boynton shared Amherst's tackling lead with seven apiece, including two for a loss by Boynton.

Bates will stay at home next Saturday at 1pm, as part of Back to Bates Weekend, to host Tufts University (1-0), which won 24-21 in overtime today at Hamilton. Amherst hosts Bowdoin (0-1) Saturday at 1pm.

ORONO, Maine -- The University of Maine football team picked up its first Colonial Athletic Association victory of the year on Saturday evening when it defeated Rhode Island (0-4, 0-2 CAA) by a score of 27-17 at Alfond Stadium.

Maine's stout defense limited Rhode Island to -8 rushing yards and forced a pair of turnovers on two interceptions by Sherrod Baltimore. The Black Hole racked up 6.0 sacks and was led by Patrick Ricard's nine total stops, including 1.5 sacks. Mike Kozlakowski added seven tackles and 1.5 sacks while Jason Matovu and Trevor Bates each made six stops.

The solid defensive effort was matched by an offensive output which saw Maine outgain the Rams
472 to 232 behind a 210-yard rushing attack. Nigel Beckford carried 17 times for 91-yards and a pair of scores while Darian Davis-Ray added 74-yards on 12 carries.

Maine was able to move the ball with success through the air as Dan Collins went 14-for-25 for 211-yards. Drew Belcher added one completion but it was a big one, going for a 51-yard touchdown to Micah Wright. Wright was the main target for the Black Bears, snatching seven receptions and going over the 100-yard mark for the second-straight week, totaling a game-high 139-yards.

Sean Decloux hit a pair of field goals for Maine, the second of which being the 36th of his career and moving him to number one all-time in makes for the Black Bears. Decloux surpassed Todd Jagoutz's previous mark of 35 makes, set in 2000.

Rhode Island jumped out to a 3-0 lead when Justin Rohrwasser hit a 30-yard field goal with 2:48 remaining in the first quarter.

Maine responded quickly, scoring 24 unanswered and distancing itself from the Rams. The 24-0 surge began when Belcher found Wright for a 51-yard touchdown strike under a minute after the Rhode Island field goal.

Baltimore's second interception gave the ball right back to the Black Bears who quickly marched down the field before Nigel Beckford bounced in for a 21-yard touchdown just 47-seconds later.
Maine extended its lead with 4:10 remaining in the first half after Decloux booted through a career-high 43-yard field goal, the longest of his career.

The offense continued to roll early in the third quarter as Beckford busted in for his second, 20+ yard score of the game, this time for 28-yards out, to extend the lead out to 24-3.

Rhode Island responded on its next drive when T.J. Anderson scored from a yard out on a fourth and goal try with 5:39 to play in the third quarter.

Decloux's record-setting 23-yard field goal 2:02 into the fourth quarter pushed the Black Bears' lead out to 27-10.

The Rams again answered quickly, marching down the field 74-yards on 10 plays and capping the drive with a three-yard rush by quarterback Paul Mroz, bringing the Rams within 10.

It would be as close as they would get as Maine closed the door, capturing its first CAA victory of the year, 27-17.

Maine continues CAA action on Oct. 3 when it travels to take on Richmond at 3:30 p.m.

MIDDLETOWN, Connecticut  -- The Bates women's soccer team tied for the second time in as many NESCAC games this season, playing host Wesleyan University to a 1-1 draw on Saturday.

Senior captain Leah Humes (Beaconsfield, Quebec) scored in the 15th minute to lift Bates (3-1-2, 0-0-2 NESCAC) into a 1-0 lead. Humes shot the ball under the crossbar after getting a long cross pass from first-year Olivia Amdur (Chicago, Ill.). Humes assumed the team goals lead with three on the play, while Amdur became Bates' assist leader with three.

Sarah Sylla evened the game late in the first half, knocking in the rebound after Bates sophomore goalie Sarah McCarthy (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) saved a header sent at Bates' goal by Lauren Goetzman.

McCarthy finished with 11 saves for Bates, while Wesleyan's Meghan Hanan totaled six. The teams were even in shot attempts, 20-20, but the Cardinals put 12 of their shots on goal, compared to seven for Bates.

The two teams played a scoreless second half. The best Cardinal chance of the period came with 29:48 left on a free kick by senior Madeline Keane from the top of the box. She rocketed a shot at McCarthy, who bobbled the save but corralled the rebound.

The Bobcats a strong chance in the final two minutes when Humes ticketed one for the lower right corner, but Hanan made a sprawling stop.

The Cardinals had the two best chances to score in the first overtime, both off the foot of Victoria Matthews.  The first one came 1:30 into the OT with a rocket from 20 yards that McCarthy knocked down. The second came with 5:10 left from about 15 yards and the rebound save got away from the goalie, but the Cards were not able to follow up.

Matthews had one more opportunity in the second overtime on a breakaway with 5:04. Her attempt to tuck the ball past the diving McCarthy into the right corner hit the post. Bates had a last gasp attempt with a corner kick in the final minute, but the ball into the box by junior Erin Shea (Marshfield, Mass.) was cleared by the Wesleyan defense.

Bates stays on the road to play at conference-leading Williams (6-0, 5-0) on Sunday, starting at 11am.

MIDDLEBURY, Vermont - The Bowdoin College women's rugby team held off a challenge from Middlebury in its first road match of the season, 43-0, on Saturday.

The Polar Bears remain unbeaten at 2-0 this fall.

How It Happened
  • The Polar Bears led 17-0 at halftime and outscored Middlebury 26-0 in the second period.
  • Bowdoin's defense, led by a scrappy forward pack and scrumhalf Emily King, held a strong Middlebury attack from scoring, despite the Panthers maintaining possession and territory in the early phases.
  • On a scrum awarded to Bowdoin for a Middlebury handling error, Bowdoin mounted a few phases of play, capped off by a strong run by Le'Shauna Phinazee who broke two tackles, one right before the goal line and surged for the line, extending to touch the ball down for the first try of the match.
  • Strong rucking from Middlebury kept the ball out of Bowdoin's hands but the Polar Bears regained possession and moved upfield.  Captain Emily King took a quick-tap penalty play near the goalline and before the opposition could regroup to defend and scored under the posts.  Conversion kick was good by Paige Pfannenstiel.
  • After a penalty kick to touch to gain field position, the Bowdoin forwards turned their lineout into a driving maul with Paige peeling off for the score in the corner.
  • Second half, the Polar Bears regrouped and handled better the defensive pressure and strong scrummaging and rucking from the Panthers.
  • Le'Shauna Phinazee tallied her second try of the game off a perfect feed from prop Pamela Zabala, who carried the ball strongly upfield through multiple defenders.
  • Moving from flanker to fullback, Pfannenstiel scored two more tries, supporting her backline with depth and speed.
  • A highlight score of the game was a total team try: hooker Sarah Wilson started it off with a perfect lineout throw to jumper Anna Piotti at the 50 meter line, who fed the ball to King.  As scrumhalf, King linked with the entire backline in a series of smart running and clean passing, with winger Katie Craighill touching down for the score.
  • Pfannenstiel converted 3 more kicks in the 2nd half

Up Next
  • Bowdoin will enjoy a bye week before returning to action on October 10 at Amherst for a noon match
