STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's (12-0) remained undefeated with a 3-0 (25-9, 25-11, 25-22) victory over Daniel Webster College (2-9) in non-conference volleyball action at the Harold Alfond Center on Tuesday night. Junior outside hitter Victoria Huntley (Ellsworth, Maine) notched a double-double with 10 kills and 14 digs in the triumph.

The Monks would not trail in the first two sets as the hosts produced double-digit wins to claim a 2-0 cushion. The third set was tightly-contested however, as neither team led by more than three points until junior setter Mariah Hebert (Biddeford, Maine) delivered an ace to put her team up, 19-15 late in the final frame. The Eagles trailed 23-20 minutes later, but a Shadai Gosselin (Somersworth, N.H.) kill and a bad set by sophomore Courtney Warrington (Canton, Tex.) offset a Huntley attack error as the hosts rolled to their fifth-consecutive shutout victory.

For the Monks, senior middle blocker Felicia Wachowiak (Milton, Mass.) netted seven kills and three total blocks, Gosselin added four kills and 12 digs, Hebert produced 19 assists, two service aces and seven digs, and freshman libero Jennelle Thompson (Farmington, N.H.) chipped in a match-high 22 digs on the evening.

For the Eagles, sophomore middle blocker Hannah Koehler (Bedford, N.H.) registered four kills, junior outside hitter Madeline Roulier (Pittsfield, Mass.) tallied three kills and 12 digs, Warrington chimed in with 13 digs and three aces, and sophomore setter Nicole Beard (Shelton, Conn.) contributed 10 assists and seven digs in the losing effort.

Saint Joseph's will host a tri-match this Saturday versus University of Saint Joseph (1:30 PM) and Maine-Fort Kent (5:30 PM). The Blue Jays and Bengals will face off in the sandwich match, which is slated to start at 3:30 PM. Daniel Webster travels to University of Saint Joseph for a 7:00 PM non-conference matchup on Thursday.

BEYOND THE BOX:
  • With the win Saint Josephs' improves to 8-4 all-time against Daniel Webster, a team that defeated the Monks by a 3-2 score in Nashua last fall
  • The team's 12-game win streak is the longest in the history of fall sports at Saint Joseph's College (women's soccer won 11 straight in 2007)

Dumond Leads Saint Joseph’s Past Southern Maine 2-1

GORHAM, Maine – Junior Kelsey Dumond (Lewiston, Maine) scored a goal in each half to lead Saint Joseph's College to a 2-1 win over University of Southern Maine in a non-conference field hockey game Tuesday afternoon at Hannaford Field.

With the win, the Monks extend their winning streak to four games and improve to 4-1 overall.  Saint Joseph's has not lost since dropping its season-opener 3-2 to Husson University.  Southern Maine drops its second straight game to fall to 4-5.

Dumond scored the first goal of the game in the 22nd minute to putting the Monks ahead 1-0.  After receiving a pass from senior Meghan Williams (Greenland, N.H./St. Thomas Aquinas), Dumond launched a hard and high driven shot that ricocheted off of the padded hand of Southern Maine junior goalie Amanda Kasbohm (York, Maine).  The Monks' lead was short-lived, however, as the Huskies surged back to tie the game in the 25th minute.  Huskies' senior captain Allison Ward (Rockland, Maine/Oceanside) laced in her fourth goal of the season after receiving an insertion pass from sophomore Kaitlin Hilton (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) on a penalty corner to send both teams into the break tied at one goal each.

In the second half, the game seemed destined for overtime with the score locked at one all in the 64th minute.  The Monks, however, benefitted from a series of four penalty corners before Dumond connected on her second goal of the game and eighth of the season in the 66th minute.  Dumond's game-winner was an unassisted tally as she collected a rebounded ball in front of the cage.

The game was evenly played between the two local rivals with Saint Joseph's holding a slim 11-10 advantage in shots and an 11-9 edge in penalty corners.  Kasbohm finished the game making seven saves in the loss.  Huskies' sophomore Tayla Smedberg (Oxford, Maine/Oxford Hills) made a defensive save. Saint Joseph's freshman Megan Baker (Gorham, Maine) played strong in net making three saves and several key plays.  Senior Chelsea Bordeau (Rumford, Maine/Mountain Valley) had a defensive save for the Monks.

Southern Maine returns to Little East Conference action on Saturday (3:30 p.m.) when it travels to Westfield State.  Saint Joseph's travels to Salem State on Thursday (6:00 p.m.) for a non-conference game.

WATERVILLE, Maine - The Thomas College men's soccer team shutout the University of New England 1-0 on Saturday night in a non-conference game at Smith Field. DJ Nicholas scored the lone goal for the Terriers in the win.

The Terriers tallied their only goal midway through the first half. London Steede-Jackson passed it through the defending line to Nicholas who fired it past the keeper and into the back of the net.
Thomas maintained the 1-0 lead in to half time, holding the Nor'easters without a shot on goal through the first 45 minutes.

The Nor'easters threatened the Terrier lead throughout the second half, with goalkeeper Joakim Sternas making timely stops, as well as strong defensive play by Lukas Bohman.
The Red and Black totaled seven shots on goal, with UNE only recording two.

Sternas stopped both shots he faced en route to his first shutout of the season. Nate Diffin, who played the first 65 minutes of the game before being relieved by Jake Rostkowski, was tagged with the loss.

The Terriers will hit the road on Saturday for their first conference match of the season against Lyndon State at 1:00 pm.

Newcomers Lead Monks Past Beavers, 3-1

STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (4-3-1, 1-1-0 GNAC) topped University of Maine-Farmington (3-3-0, 1-0-0 NAC), 3-1, in a non-conference men's soccer contest at Westerlea Way Field on Tuesday afternoon. Freshman forward Brett Mattos (Mahopac, N.Y.) scored what proved to be the game winner off a Ralph Houanche (Port-au-Prince, Haiti) pass in the 52nd minute. All three of the Monks' goals were scored by players who are currently in their first year with the SJC program.

Junior midfielder Johnny Thomas (Boston, Mass.) lifted the hosts to an early lead, scoring his fifth goal of the season at the 4:57 mark off a deflection. Maine-Farmington junior midfielder Ibrahim Achekh (Aboudeia, Chad) tapped in a header off an Austin Dooley (Buckfield, Maine) feed nine minutes later, knotting the contest at 1-1.

The eventual game-winner was set up by a well-placed corner kick off the foot of Houanche at the 51:24 mark. Kicking from the right of UMF keeper Matt Wilson (Hamden, Conn.), Houanche launched the ball into the box, eventually finding Mattos who drove a shot into the lower center of the net, making it a 2-1 game with 38:36 remaining.

The Monks tacked on an insurance goal in the 61st minute, as Mattos was fouled in the box setting up a penalty kick for freshman Dalton Gaumer (Riverside, Calif.), who let fly a kick into the right corner for the first goal of his NCAA career. Wilson guessed left and dove in that direction to no avail.

The Beavers had a pair of prime opportunities, both penalty kicks, in the final 15 minutes of play, but SJC senior keeper Scott Benner (Post Falls, Idaho) proved up to the task on both bids. Junior midfielder Henry Ametti (Skowhegan, Maine) was the first to shoot from the dot, but was denied on a diving stop to the right by Benner at the 75:03 mark. Almost exactly nine minutes later, senior Uriah Forest-Bulley (Turner Falls, Mass.) lined up for his chance after a foul in the box, but Benner made another huge save, this time lunging to the left, preserving the 3-1 margin in the process.

Saint Joseph's held meager advantages in both shots (12-10) and corner kicks (4-1) in the victory. Benner made four saves for the Monks while Wilson totaled three stops for the Beavers on the afternoon.

Saint Joseph's travels to University of Maine-Presque Isle for a 2:00 PM non-conference game on Friday. Maine-Farmington hosts conference-rival Maine Maritime Academy on Saturday at 1:00 PM.

BEYOND THE BOX:
  • With the victory, Saint Joseph's improves to 7-17-4 all-time versus Maine-Farmington and has not lost to the Beavers since 2007, with a 7-0-1 record against them over the last eight years
  • Today's win marks the second occasion in which the Monks have won consecutive contests under the watch of second-year Head Coach Adrian Dubois
  • Thomas leads the Monks with five goals through eight games, a total which would have placed him a tie for last season's final leader (Austin Bell, five goals in 19 games)

UP NEXT:
  • St. Joe's is 13-10-1 in the history of the series with Maine-Presque Isle and defeated the Owls by a 5-0 margin at Westerlea Way Field last fall
  • The Monks have defeated the Owls in four consecutive meetings with all four wins being of the shutout variety

UNE hands women's soccer its first loss of the season, 2-0

LEWISTON, Maine -- Becca Murphy and Jessica Meader connected on two goals less than 10 minutes apart in the second half, giving the University of New England a 2-0 non-conference victory over the Bates College women's soccer team, and dealing the host Bobcats their first loss of the season.

The Nor'easters (5-2-0) won their second straight game and return to Commonwealth Coast Conference play on Saturday at 12pm, hosting Salve Regina.

Bates (3-1-1) plays back-to-back NESCAC games this weekend, at Wesleyan on Saturday at 12pm and at Williams on Sunday at 11am.

Bates attempted 35 shots in the game to UNE's 17, including a 12-10 advantage in shots on goal, but the Nor'easters created better scoring chances and took better advantage of them.

Murphy first scored in the 48th minute, getting a pass from Meader and shooting from 30 yards in front of the Bates goal, dropping the ball over the reach of Bates sophomore goalie Sarah McCarthy (Rockville Centre, N.Y.), under the crossbar and inside the right post.

Nearly 10 minutes later, in the 57th minute, Meader blasted a shot on a breakaway that McCarthy turned away, but Murphy knocked in the carom from 10 yards out for the 2-0 advantage.

Bates outshot UNE 19-9 in the first half, but the Nor'easters had just as many serious scoring threats as the Bobcats.

Bates' best chance in the period came in the 33rd minute, when sophomore Libby Masalsky's (Dedham, Mass.) shot from near the right endline got past UNE goalie Brielle Robinson, who was caught out of the Nor'easter goal, but walled off at the goal line by a UNE defender. Karen Lockhart hit the ground to try to knock in the rebound, but two UNE defenders also converged on the ball to prevent the score.

UNE then had a flurry in the 40th minute, with back-to-back shots in close by Devon Wolfenden first blocked by a Bates back, then saved by McCarthy. McCarthy also stopped a UNE chance in the final minute of the half, storming out of the goal to thwart a breakaway chance by Nor'easter forward Jackie Dickerson.

UNE goalie Brielle Robinson earned the shutout with 10 saves, with two other saves credited to the team. For Bates, McCarthy made eight saves.
