Rockland, Maine - It is that time again already, The Maine Lobster Festival. Last night we met with all of the 2013 Sea Princesses. I know, I know, such tough work, but, someone has to do it. After introductions, the girls were given a tour of the Coast Guard Station at Rockland. Eighteen girls and in only a few week one of these girls will become Maine Sea Goddess. Between now and then there is a lot of work to do. In the next weeks these girls will learn how to walk and how to wave, but more than that they will learn how to become ambassadors for the Coast of Maine. They will learn local business and local history. They will become familiar with the Maine business, the fishing industry and Maine tourism. It will be a lot to learn in a very short time.

Our tour of the Coast Guard station was headed by Sarah Cunningham the Officer of the Day along with two other guardsmen. Though most of us know that Rockland has a Coast Guard base few know all that these young men and women are responsible for. After a tour of the office on Tilson Ave. the girls walked the distance to the end of the street where they were able to board the rescue boats of the Rockland Coast Guard Base.

I believe the girls left with a much better understanding of all the local Coast Guard is responsible, from search and rescue, to buoy tending and ice breaking in the winter. The girls were also given a clear understanding of what it is like to choose the Coast Guard as a career path. Thank you Sarah and your team.

There is a lot planned for the 2013 Sea Princesses over the next weeks.
