CASTINE, Maine - Maine Maritime Academy picked up an impressive 75-28 victory over Maine-Presque Isle to advance to the Pepsi Mariner Challenge Championship game tomorrow.
Freshman Megan McLean (Eliot, Maine) opened up the scoring for the Mariners when she splashed a three, but the Owls responded with six-straight points to take a brief 6-3 lead before Mackenzie Vosburgh (Rhinebeck, N.Y. and Kristi Willey (Topsham, Maine) sank back-to-back three-pointers. Maine Maritime took a 13-8 lead into the second quarter, and held the Owls to just two points in the second quarter on their way to the 75-28 victory.
Freshman Alayne Felix (Mahopac, N.Y.) scored a game-high 16 points in her debut for the Mariners, while adding six rebounds, two assists and a steal. Amanda Holewiak (Somerset, Mass.) added a double-double off the bench with 11 points and 11 rebounds while tallying a block, and teammate Tess Clark (Spring, Texas) added 10 points, seven rebounds and a steal.
Amanda Hotham led the Owls will 11 points and six rebounds, as Brianna Losee added six points, two rebounds, two steals and a pair of assists.
The Mariners (1-0) will take on UMass.-Boston (1-0) tomorrow at 2:00 p.m., while the Owls (0-1) will take on Endicott College (0-1) at 12:00 p.m.
