The Polar Bears opened their fall 2015 season with four events including the Penobscot Bay Open at Maine Maritime, the Harman Trophy at Maine Maritime, the Toni Deutsch at MIT, and the Invite at Harvard.
The Polar Bears had two teams competing at Harvard including Phil Koch '16, Nora Cullen'18, Matt Kaplan '19, Louisa Lindgren '19, Ellis Price'18, Emily Salitan'16, Alex Vasiliou'18, and Jake Griffin'18. The team sailed well in classic easterly conditions on the Charles River and finished first and second overall out of fifteen teams competing.
Just up the river at MIT, the Polar Bears competed at the Women's Toni Deutsch Regatta. Erin Mullins'16 and Julia Rew'16 sailed A division with Mimi Paz'17 and Martie Ogle'18 sailed B division. The Polar Bears sailed a very consistent regatta and finished second in A and B division and won the event by twenty-two points over the second place BU Terriers.
Up at Maine Maritime, the team competed in two regattas. At the Harman Cup sailed in Colgate 26s, the team battle light air and lots of current. The team struggled a bit in the conditions on Saturday but really made some nice gains on Sunday and finished third of eight teams, thus qualifying the Polar Bears for the Match Race New England Championship which will be hosted by Salve Regina October 17-18. This is the first time the Polar Bears will be competing in Sloop New Englands since the fall of 2004. Competing for the Polar Bears was Harrison Hawk'18, Jack McGuire'17, Louis Frumer'18, and Sydney Jacques'18.
Matt Lyons'17 sailed with Dana Bloch'17 in A division and Courtney Koos'16 sailed with Olivia Diserio'16 in B division at the Penobscot Bay Open. Seven races were completed in light winds and flat water. The team put together some strong scores on Sunday afternoon and finished third overall out of the fourteen teams competing.
