Lewiston, Maine - Andy Miele and Brandon McMillan each scored in the shootout to lift the Pirates over Providence Bruins 4-3 Wednesday at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee. Three different Pirates scored goals in regulation and Mark Visentin made 28 saves in the win, the second straight for the Pirates over the Bruins.
The Pirates found themselves down early on, allowing two goals in under two minutes about halfway through the first. Ben Youds opened the scoring for the Bruins when his shot from the point beat Visentin on the blocker side at 10:26. Joe Morrow then extended the Providence lead when he beat Visentin at the 12:09 mark.
But the Pirates would get one back late in the first when Daine Todd notched his first goal of the year, his first as a professional. With Rob Flick off for slashing, Todd took a shot from the point that squeaked its way through a mass of bodies and Malcolm Subban's pads and into the net with just five seconds remaining in the first.
The Bruins wasted little time recapturing the two-goal lead when at 5:26 in the second period when David Warsofsky rang his shot from the top-left circle off the far post and in.
Again, the Pirates pulled to within one as Lucas Lessio scored his fifth goal of the year, deflecting in a shot from Andy Miele at 9:15 in the second period.
The Pirates continued to press in the third, eventually capitalizing on a rebound goal from Shinnimin at 14:14 in the third. With players in front, Lessio let go of a shot from the blue line. Subban made the save, but was unable to control the rebound, allowing Shinnimin to power it home and tie the game at three.
In the shootout, Miele and McMillan were able to beat Subban while Visentin stopped all four shooters he faced for the first Pirates shootout win at home and second of the season.
The two teams will face off again on Friday in Providence as the Pirates look for a sweep of the week. Puck drop is set for 7:05 p.m. Friday's game can be heard on the Pirates flagship stations WPEI 95.5/95.9 FM as well as WEZR AM 1240 in the Lewiston/Auburn area and WTME AM 780/1450 in Oxford County.
