The Coast Guard was alerted by VHF radio at about 6:41 p.m. Sunday that a 55-foot fishing vessel was taking on water with two people aboard, according to a press release from the Coast Guard. Officials did not release information about the boat, its crew or where it originated.
A rescue crew from the Coast Guard Station Southwest Harbor was launched on a 47-foot motor life boat to search for the fishermen and vessel. The Coast Guard Cutter Jefferson Island also was diverted to assist with the search and Air Station Cape Cod. Mass. launched an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew and a C-144 Ocean Sentry aircraft crew.
Crews were still searching Monday morning and no new information was available, according to an officer who answered the phone at the Coast Guard Sector Northern New England command center in South Portland.
