Proposal recommends prohibiting the use of polystyrene for food service

What:  Later this month, September 16, the Portland City Council will consider the Transportation, Sustainability and Energy Committee’s proposed amendment to prohibit food service establishments from serving food in packaging or containers made from polystyrene foam as well as prohibit the retail sale of polystyrene food service products.  Please note, this item will not be discussed at the September 9th City Council meeting.

The amendment is the result of the majority opinion of the Green Packaging Working Group, which was created by the Transportation, Sustainability and Energy Committee earlier this year to develop a policy to address environmental and health concerns related to polystyrene. If adopted, the ordinance would become effective July, 2015 to allow merchants to deplete existing inventory of polystyrene foam service ware. Visit the city's website for more information, http://www.portlandmaine.gov/greenpackagingworkinggroup.htm.
