The Belfast Garden Club is pleased to award $2,500 in scholarship funds to two deserving students, Alexis Morse of Unity and Erin Elizabeth Rollins of Lincolnville who each received $1,250. The guidelines for the award stipulate that the student must be a Waldo County resident working toward a degree in conservation, ecology, horticulture, natural resources, sustainable agriculture or a related field.
Alexis Morse of Unity recently graduated from Mount View High School at the top of her class of 95 students. She will be attending New England University in the fall, studying biology. Alexis has been on the high honor roll throughout her high school years as well as being a member of the National Honor Society. She received awards for Excellence in Science, the Citizenship Award, Excellence in English, Phi Beta Kappa Certificate of Recognition, Society of Women’s Engineers Certificate of merit, Dirigo Girl’s State Participant, Best Athlete Award, Excellence in Bank, Place first place in the Poetry contest and Excellence in Social Studies. During her high school years she has also been a volunteer at Maine Farmland Trust, Waldo county Action Partners, Inland Hospital volunteer, Special Olympics, Soccer Youth Camp, Basketball Youth Camp, Military Support Group, Y.M.C.A., and a Mount view High School Writing Mentor.
Second time scholarship winner, Erin Rollins of Lincolnville will be a sophomore at Husson University studying biology with a focus on plants and genetically modified crops. Erin is also very active in the community volunteering at Aldermere Farm and the Girl Scouts of America as well as many other community service organizations. Erin has been on the Board of Outreach at First Congregational Church of Camden, a STAR Program Volunteer Instructor, an Honorary Page, in the Maine House of Representatives, a Knox County Animal Rescue Team volunteer, and become an Americn Red Cross Certified Babysitter.The Belfast Garden Club congratulates the awardees on their strong high school careers and wishes them the best of luck as they return to school this fall.
The Belfast Garden Club has promoted civic beautification and
presented speakers to stimulate the knowledge and love of gardening
since 1929. The Belfast Garden Club awards at least one scholarship each year to a Waldo County high school graduate who is planning to pursue an
associate's or bachelor's degree in conservation, ecology, horticulture, natural resources, sustainable agriculture or a related field. The funds for the scholarship are raised at the Club’s annual Green Thumb Sale in May.
The Belfast Garden Club is responsible for maintaining 13 public gardens in the City. The Garden Club also hosts the Open Garden Days all summer, donates $500 to the Troy Howard Middle School for their garden, and donates $250 for gardening and related books to the Belfast Free Library, also funding evening speakers at the library each year. In addition, BGC decorates the Belfast Free Library for the holidays. The Club hosts monthly environmental and conservation talks as well as monthly speakers on garden-related topics at our meetings. All Club meetings and talks are open to the public. The Club welcomes new members year round, come and join us!
